I am not sure that “Secrets to Dog Training” and I are in sync on this particular issue. Alex and Chico have never whined. Lil Maya frequently whines when she wants to play tug-of-war with her rope toy. This is not, as the book suggests, a reaction to stress (unless a strong desire to play is a form of stress). It appears to be a puppy trait, although Lil Maya is at least two years old and has had a litter of pups. Perhaps I should quit indulging Lil Maya when she whines and invite her to play when she is not whining. (I do enjoy playing with her.)
