Chico is a sometimes digger. He clearly has a keen sense of sight because he will launch himself after a lizard running up the wall or a bird checking out the flowers. When he senses that something is under the HVAC condenser unit he will tear up the surrounding Astroturf and make a mess. We are making some progress with the reprimand "Leave It!” followed by praise when he does leave.

"Secrets to Dog Training" provide a discussion of digging, including reasons why dogs engage in this activity. Like so many other disruptive behaviors it usually is the result of boredom and physical inactivity. Pages 118 and 119 of the book provide an interesting case study.
