Nuisance Jumping

“Secrets to Dog Training” deals with two types of jumping behavior:  jumping on furniture and jumping on people.  Our dogs have been allowed to jump on furniture whenever they want for so long that it is too late to change that behavior.  Maybe we will try to apply it to our bed, but forget the couch and chairs.

As far as jumping on people, Chico has a bad jumping habit with Alex a bit behind him.  We seem to be making some progress by shunning them (i.e. turning our backs to them) when they try to jump on us. That was one of the first lessons we learned from this book.  We expect further improvement as we continue the shunning, coupled with our efforts to establish and maintain our status as the pack leaders.

Pages 108 through 112 of “Secrets to Dog Training" provide a discussion of jumping on furniture, including reasons why dogs engage in this activity with examples of how to correct this behavior. Page 113 provides a discussion of jumping on people, including reasons why dogs engage in this activity with examples of how to correct this behavior. Pages 112 and 114 of the book provide interesting case studies.
