Chewing must be an innate puppy activity. As a puppy Alex chewed on just about
everything: books, shoes, slippers,
furniture, etc. Now the only thing he chews on is a Kong. Chico is not much for chewing on a Kong but
he will eviscerate a stuffed toy in five minutes flat. Lil Maya is almost as bad as Chico with
stuffed toys, and she sometimes chews on the furniture. Reprimanding her with "Leave it!"
when we catch her in the act seems to be working. The trouble is catching her in the act. We no longer let any of the dogs chew on
stuffed toys, allowing them only rope toys, Kongs, and tennis balls as
playthings.
Pages 102 through 105 of "Secrets to Dog Training" provide a discussion of chewing and other destructive behavior, including reasons why dogs engage in these activities. It usually is the result of boredom and physical inactivity. Page 107 of the book provides an interesting case study.
